Architectural Style — The architectural style of the cathedral was designed with Gothic Revival features. The Lady Chapel was the first area of the cathedral to be completed in the year 1910; this spectacular chapel was designed with much more detail than the remainder of the cathedral. The walls are elegantly carved with words from St John's Gospel. A 15th century statue of the Virgin Mary created by the world famous Giovanni Della Robbia is a main feature of the chapel as well as the beautifully crafted organ. The cathedrals bell tower is the highest at 219 feet and one of the heaviest working peal of bells in the world, weighing an impressive 31 tons. The High Alter, Chancel and Eastern Transepts were completed in 1924. Regular church services began during 1940. The Tower was completed on the 20th February 1942, at the top of the tower some 331 feet up on an extremely cold day Sir Giles Scott laid the final stone on the finial. 1961 saw the completion of the bridge and first bay of the knave. The Grand Organ in the cathedral has ten, 268 pipes and is the largest working organ in the world. Both organs in the cathedral were built by Henry Willis & Sons; work on the Grand Organ commenced in the year of 1923 and took three years to complete. |
