The Anglican Cathedral, Liverpool (L1)

The Anglican CathedralThe Anglican Cathedral — Built on a prominent position situated on St James's Mount, this spectacular building proudly sits overlooking the city of Liverpool. A decision to choose the design of what would become known as the Cathedral Church of Christ was made by hosting a competition in 1903. A breathtaking design by Giles Gilbert Scott, who was then an unknown 22 year old architect, was chosen. During 1904 the foundation stone was laid by King Edward VII. The city of Liverpool was bombed very heavily during WW2, but thankfully very little damage affected the development of the cathedral. Money became an issue after WW2 and this had a dramatic effect on the pace of finishing the build. During 1972 the cathedral was finally finished and was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II. Unfortunately it was too late for the architect who designed what was to become one of the largest cathedrals in the world; sadly Sir Giles Gilbert Scott died in 1960 and is buried under the bell tower.
