St. James Cemetary

St James CemetaryDuring the 1600's what is now known as St James's Cemetery, was originally a sandstone quarry. Stone from this quarry was used to develop the expanding Liverpool docklands, Town Hall and many more fine buildings located within this rapidly expanding city. The quarry was closed in 1825 as the sandstone had been completely exhausted. Once the quarry was closed, it was left to the town council to make a decision of what to do with this "eyesore". The sum of £20,000 was raised and the architect John Foster was chosen to design a cemetery similar to the Pere-la-Chaise, Paris. During the next 111 years, St James's cemetery became the final resting place for 57,774 souls and in 1936 the cemetery was considered full and was closed. Unfortunately after the closure of this outstanding cemetery, it became abandoned and fell into disrepair. Vandalism was a problem and the area sadly became overgrown. However during the 1960's action was taken and a plan to turn this once magnificent historical cemetery into a public garden was proposed. Many famous Liverpool Victorians are buried at St James's, gravestones of the cemeteries creator John Foster, Kitty Wilkinson founder of the "wash house" and The Rt. Hon. William Huskisson MP, who was unfortunately the first fatality of the locomotive. St James Cemetery is now a conservation area, and a nature conservation site, Grade 1.
