Stained Glass Windows — The stained glass windows of the Anglican Cathedral, not only depict the history of the Christian faith but also the story of Liverpool and its rise in prosperity and power. The Lady Chapel portrait window situated on the west wall features Liverpool's most famous women from various areas of life. Kitty Wilkinson was the founder of the 'wash house' after originally opening her doors to her neighbours to allow them use of her boiler to wash bed linen and clothes to try and free them of infection. Kitty opened the first 'wash house' in 1842. Kitty was buried in St James's cemetery in 1860. Agnes Jones is also depicted, she was the first trained nurse of the Liverpool Workhouse Infirmary; Agnes devoted her short life to the tireless care of Liverpool's poor and sick, at the age of 35 Agnes died from Typhus. Look carefully at the stained glass around the cathedral and you will see images of the White Star Line, George Bodley and Sir Giles Gilbert Scott who were the joint architects during the construction of this magnificent cathedral are both shown sitting together. |
