The Oratory — The foundation stone for the Oratory was laid in 1827 by Jonathan Brooks, the then Rector of Liverpool. John Foster designed this building based on the Grecian architectural revival of the early 1800's. Originally built as the chapel to St James's Cemetery, this Oratory was used to perform funeral services before laying the dead in their final resting place. This 19th century church was also used as a cenotaph to house monuments to the dead. Because of the limited use of this chapel, John Foster was free to design this Greek monument to resemble an Athenian Acropolis. Furnished with simple pews and a lectern, this monument is small enough not to provide windows, but to use the natural light that emanated from the skylight in the roof. After the closure of St James's cemetery in 1936 this proud Greek monument sadly became abandoned and disused; however in 1980 Merseyside County Council became responsible for the Oratory and carried out extensive repairs to the building. The renovation project was completed in 1986 and this splendid Greek monument joined the National Museums and Galleries of Merseyside. This once abandoned building is now home to many 19th century sculptures. |
