The Tunnels — St James's cemetery has three tunnels; the main tunnel (as shown) is used as the pedestrian tunnel into the cemetery. The tunnel itself is dark and has an incline that has had work carried out on the stone floor as it could be quite slippery. Look around you as you enter the tunnel and you will see early signs of graffiti by the quarrymen and stonemasons who worked here, some graffiti dates back to the early 1800's. Although this tunnel has been described as a 'natural arch' by ordinance survey maps, you can clearly see chisel marks on the roof and walls. The tunnel is aligned with gravestones; the decision to put them here was made in the 1960's when the cemetery was turned into a public park. The second tunnel was once used as the route for the hearse pulled by horse drawn carriages; sadly this tunnel has recently been blocked off due to vagrants using it as a home, however this 17th century tunnel has been perfectly preserved behind the stones and hopefully will be re-opened in the future. The third and final tunnel was once used as the early quarrymen's route, approximately 4 metres in width, it is suggested that it was used by the quarrymen to transport heavy and difficult loads. |
