The Empire Theatre — The Empire Theatre stands where The New Prince of Wales Theatre and Opera House was located in 1866. At that time it was considered to be Liverpool's largest theatre. After its closure in 1894 the theater changed ownership several times, and in 1866 became known as the Empire. In 1924 the Empire closed its doors and was replaced with the building that exists today. In April 1979 Merseyside County Council saved the Empire from possible extinction due to poor revenues. At that time the interior was extensively renovated, with ongoing improvements, which are still being made by its current owners, Clear Channel Entertainment. Today this is the largest two-tier theatre in England and the theatre offers a wide variety of entertainment from opera and ballet to popular artists. The Empire also has the distinction of presenting the Beatles final concert on the 5th of December 1965. |
