The Picton Library — The Picton Reading Room, whose circular structure was designed by Cornelius Sherlock, was modeled after The British Museum Reading Room rotunda. This magnificent structure was opened in 1879, and it has the distinction of being the first public building in Liverpool to have electric lighting. The Picton Reading Room was an addition to the main library, which was built in 1860 through the generosity of William Brown. These two buildings, together with the Oak Room and the Hornby Library, both added at a later date, form The Central Library of Liverpool. The Hornby Library designed by Thomas Schlemerdine and the Oak Room which houses the library's rare books, were more traditional structures for that period of time. It is noteworthy that among the rare books is a collection of the Birds of America by John James Audubon, which was purchased with a donation from Joseph Shipley, whose partner William Brown was instrumental in creating the library. The library complex is now part of the World Heritage Preservation site in William Brown Street. |
