Radio City, Liverpool (L1)

Radio City — Radio City Tower, also known as St. John's Beacon, is one of the most distinctive sights in Liverpool. The tower was designed by Weightman & Bullen Architects, Ltd as a novel architectural solution for a ventilation shaft to remove fumes from St. John's Market. Ironically, the law changed upon its completion, and the tower was never able to be used as the "chimney" it was designed for. The original structure was built in 1968 with a revolving restaurant at the top, however, the restaurant closed after a year and a half when the bearings seized, and remained essentially unused until Clear Channels moved their studios into the tower in the year 2000 and began broadcasting Radio City 96.7 and Magic 1548. The tower has since been remodeled and the outdoor rooftop observation deck is now used for offices and conference rooms. Presently the tower broadcasts City Talk 105.9 in addition to Radio City 96.7 and Magic 1548. Tours of the tower are available to the public by contacting Radio City directly.
