St. Georges Hall

Saint Georges HallSt George's Hall is perhaps one of the most interesting buildings in England, due to the nature of its use. It is a court where one can be tried for murder, a place where you can have a huge gala event, or you can go listen to a concert at the hall. All this is due to the Liverpool citizenry of the 1800's whose concern was with raising funds to build a place to hold their triennial music festival, while at the same time the Civil and Crown Courts were seeking to build their own building. A young London architect, Harvey Lonsdale Elmes, won the competition in 1839 to build the concert hall, and he conceived an idea to incorporate everything under one roof, which was readily accepted by all and construction was started in 1841. This neoclassical structure contains a Concert Hall, plus a Small Concert Room, a Civil Court, the Crown Court and a Grand Jury Room with smaller court rooms, as well as a basement with cells for prisoners. To add to the history of this site, its colourful pre-history included the first Liverpool Infirmary 1749 to 1824, a Seaman's Hospital, a Medical Library and a Lunatic Asylum. In the early 2000's a major renovation of St. George's Hall began, with an official reopening in April 2007 by HRH Prince of Wales. The present structure is part of the William Brown Street conservation area and in 2004 the hall and the surrounding area become part of Liverpool's World Heritage Site. The Hall has a Heritage Center with exhibitions, reconstructions and a range of inter-active themed tours such as depicting the activities of the courts that enhances the history of this extraordinary Hall and its cultural heritage.
