The World Museum — There has been a Museum of Natural History in Liverpool since 1853, when the 13th Earl of Derby bequeathed his natural history collection to Liverpool. This was located in the civic center in two rooms, in a building on Duke Street and was called the Derby Museum. The popularity of this early museum led to a permanent building when William Brown, a wealthy Liverpool benefactor, provided the land and finance for the new structure in 1860. The museum has undergone several name changes since the nineteenth century; the most recent was Liverpool Museum, prior to the name being changed to fit the thousands of fascinating exhibits, collections and artifacts from around the world. The name change took effect in 2005 after the refurbishment and expansion of the museum. The World Museum covers subjects ranging from archaeology, ethnology and the natural and physical sciences. There is also an aquarium, a Natural History Centre and a Planetarium. Computer interactives and special activities are also available to the public. The Treasure House Theatre is part of the World Museum, hosting music and dance performances, as well as providing video conferences with people and places around the world, offering fascinating lectures by experts. |
